Koneswaram Temple & The Ravana Cleft (Trincomalee)

Dramatically perched atop the towering cliffs of Swami Rock overlooking the Indian Ocean and the natural harbor of Trincomalee, Koneswaram Temple is one of the five ancient Pancha Ishwarams dedicated to Lord Shiva across Sri Lanka. Known in classical Sanskrit literature as Dakshina-Kailasham (The Southern Mount Kailash), it occupies a central place in the religious lore of Emperor Ravana.

The Legend of Ravana Vettuwa (Ravana's Cleft)

Adjacent to the temple precipice lies a dramatic geological chasm cleaving the cliff face vertically down to the crashing sea below. Known locally as Ravana Vettuwa (Ravana's Cleft), ancient lore tells that King Ravana was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. When his mother fell critically ill, Ravana attempted to lift the entire sacred mountain of Koneswaram and carry it home to her bedside.

As he began heaving the rock, Lord Shiva pressed his great toe onto the peak to anchor it, trapping Ravana's fingers beneath the stone. In remorse and devotion, Ravana fashioned a divine veena instrument out of one of his ten heads and his own nerves, playing and singing the ecstatic Shiva Tandava Stotram. Pleased with his profound musical devotion, Shiva released him and gifted him the legendary Chandrahas sword.
